Personality: Belphegor is rather unique, in that it’s simple mannerisms and body language that set him apart from the others of his canon, more than what he does or says. Despite the fact that he’s a very depraved human being, he exudes a royal aura - the kind of confidence that comes from being important. He always stands up straight, even when he’s slouching. His shoulders are always square, suggesting that he’s secure in himself. The way he stands and walks is always open and wide in an almost uncaring fashion. Like he’s somehow always open for an attack but always on guard. There’s nothing closed off about him - in fact it’s obvious he’s a seasoned fighter.

That aside, the people in Bel’s life have shaped exactly who he is. When he was a child, it was his family and twin brother. He might have been a good kid if he and Rasiel got along at all. Instead they weren’t your typical introverted twins that only played with each other - they were bitter rivals and hated one another. It didn’t help that they both knew only one could succeed the throne of their kingdom. This instigated one up battles that would quickly escalate until they were literally throwing things to aim for a kill. Worse yet, was that no one would stop the fights and reprimand them for it. They allowed these things to continue until Bel couldn’t take being underdog anymore. The end result was that violence was allowed, and since they were princes they could get away with quite a great deal of things. One was actually killing his family and getting away with it scot free. At the age of eight. He literally poisoned and cut them up, then fled the castle they lived in. Which was when he voluntarily joined the Varia, an elite assassination squad working for the highest ranking mafia family in all of Italy. All the things he was taught at a tender age were manifested in his abilities and new profession. He was allowed to kill people. He was allowed to be depraved. It was not only because of being a prince anymore, though that was his excuse for everything. It was because he grew up around people with the same personality traits - like a blatant disregard for human trash and being brutal on top of it. Squalo is a stab happy loudmouth, Xanxus smacks people around and has temper tantrums, Lussuria is literally a necrophiliac. Those are just some of the things that are acceptable in his world. Those examples are set to tell him that he can do exactly whatever he wants.

When Bel was just sixteen he was already an officer of the Varia and likely had been for years. He’s a genius with both tactical and street smarts. A very deadly combination, honestly. But more than that, it says he’s a capable leader if he can command a squad of his own at such a young age. He doesn’t waste energy and movements that are unnecessary and has the ability to take orders as long as he gets a little fun out of it. However, it’s not these that earned him the nickname of ‘Prince the Ripper’. It’s the things he did on missions and for recreation that gave him the title. His brutality and obsession with blood and taking life that did. Just as he did with Rasiel, each victim of his assassinry has been cut up - stabbed beyond recognition. On top of it, he tends to take some kind of perverse joy out of it. In moments like this, it’s quite clear that he’s nothing short of insane. Which isn’t much of a secret if one were to look at him. There’s a vibe that something is off about Belphegor when he’s sixteen. Something that is made less painfully obvious as he gets on in years, a nice calm settling over him. He looks less like a homicidal maniac, and more of a killer next door. Despite the fact that he doesn’t... actually kill innocent people. An eccentricity, but he simply won’t harm someone that hasn’t already become a killer. It’s not a sense of justice that drives him, but that it allows him to

If nothing else has been established, it’s that Bel doesn’t particularly care for anyone as much as he does himself. It’s not that he just blatantly doesn’t care (though that’s also the typical case), but that he views himself as being higher on the food chain than someone else. He has close friendships - as close as they can be - within the Varia but if any one of them were to betray him or the Varia itself, he would have absolutely no qualms about killing them. He wouldn’t need much of an order to hunt them down, and might actually volunteer for the job. Bel may not look it, but he’s very loyal to the Varia and sees them as something of a dysfunctional family of sorts. Though he would never admit that aloud. It doesn’t hurt that the officers actually sit down to dinner with each other most nights they’re all in the same place. They exchange banter and barbs, and act more like a band of brothers than they do cold blooded assassins. This is probably why he treated Mammon like a baby (though Bel always knew he was anything but) when he was a kid, and why he treats Fran like a younger brother he doesn’t like to deal with.

Unlike his younger self, he’s more calm as he gets older. However, the thing that remains constant is that Bel is kind of closed off. He’s transparent in terms of many things, but it doesn’t mean he talks about them. He says what he wants to get to the point, but it doesn’t mean it’s the whole truth. If anything, what he says is twisted to paint the best or worse image of something. Everything else is between the lines, ready for assumption or interpretation. Bel is blunt to a point, antagonistic to another, and really just likes to be lazy and have fun. These are the reasons he likes to push buttons and does it often enough.

Also something worthy of note, is how as an adult he receives Raseil’s appearance. While growing up that was one of the major things Bel’s proudest achievements. He never spoke of it, much like he doesn’t talk about many things in his life, but it has the power to drive him into frenzies. Should someone actually end up injuring him during battle, Bel becomes enthralled by his own blood, perversely excited by just remembering his older brother’s death by his own hand. So upon actually seeing Rasiel alive, it throws him for a loop. Not that it’s visible as much more than him looking rather nervous, but he remains somewhat unscathed when Boss takes his brother out again for him.
